dOCUMENTA(13) opened on June 9, 2012 in Kassel, Germany. It is the world’s most important exhibition of modern and contemporary art, showcasing the most renowned artists of our time. It takes place every five years, lasts 100 days and is expected to attract more than 750,000 visitors.

In the past, most Documentas have stirred up the world of art. Following that tradition, this year’s artistic director the American-born curator Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev focuses on viewpoints critical of capitalism. Christov-Bakargiev — a veteran of MoMA PS1 noted that the exhibition is to question “the persistent belief in economic growth,” and will be “driven by a holistic, non-logo-centric vision.”

dOCUMENTA(13) includes archival and research-based projects as well as experiments in the field of art, politics, literature, philosophy and science, but also shows more traditional mediums like painting, sculpture, photography, film, performance, installation, and audio. It is a representation of all current artistic practices from both inside and outside the traditional studio space. In total, nearly 200 artists from more than 50 countries are participating.
