Julia Dean Documentary Photography Workshop

This intensive 3-day course entitled, Magazine Stories for the Documentary Photographer, will concentrate on developing long-term stories and discussing their structural, logistical, technical, and ethical aspects, balancing objectivity with personal vision in photojournalism and documentary photography. After individual portfolio reviews, Gerd shares the personal methods and techniques he uses to create his own color work, such as story research; how to approach a subject and establish trust; choice of lenses, light, film, flash, and filters to capture mood and content; the essentials of color composition; establishing a sense of place; and other working methods of National Geographic photographers. For digital shooters, Gerd will discuss storage options during long term assignments in remote locations; image identification, labeling and captioning; post production workflow; and packaging your stories for resale market distribution. The workshop takes place February 2-4 at Julia Dean and Assoc. in Venice, California.
