Documenting with Personal Vision

5-day Photography Workshop with Gerd Ludwig
Los Angeles, April 18-22
$965

This 5-day workshop/masterclass by National Geographic Photographer Gerd Ludwig is for photographers and serious amateurs who want to take their photography to the next level. It concentrates on the aesthetic, technical, and logistical aspects of photographing with personal vision and balanced objectivity. It is designed to help photographers develop a personal eye, and to leave feeling inspired.

The workshop takes place during The Month of Photography Los Angeles, a program of The Lucie Foundation.

How it Works:

Each participant should come prepared with a subject idea with the goal of producing a set of images by the end of the workshop. After individual portfolio reviews, Gerd will provide guidance to help streamline each idea, provide research tips, and create a coverage plan.

Throughout the workshop critiques will take place, both in groups and individually. In meetings with the students Gerd will be available for advice on career aspirations. The course will culminate with each photographer presenting his or her photographs to the class for feedback.

The workshop will be held in Gerd Ludwig’s spacious and unique home in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles (The workshop fee includes a light lunch salad). Also, expect one of Gerd’s fellow photographers to stop by for a brief guest presentation

A few weeks before the workshop starts, a blog will be set up to allow students to communicate with each other, and with Gerd, to prepare for the workshop, get acquainted, and help each other with logistics and story research.

Students must provide their own photographic equipment, laptops, and transportation. Be prepared for long hours of shooting, editing, critiquing and interacting with one another and with the instructor. (don’t worry, we will have fun too).

What is Covered:

Gerd will stress finding and researching subjects, photographing people in an intimate fashion, making photographs that communicate emotionally as well as editorially, and using aesthetics in a sophisticated manner. Workshop participants will be encouraged to take professional risks to produce top quality work worthy of publications, books or galleries. Gerd will outline the structural elements and differences between a reportage, series, and essay and openly share the personal approaches he uses to create his own stories for National Geographic Magazine.

Technical discussions will focus on how to use photographic tools in real-world scenarios to capture atmosphere and mood, while maintaining a sense of place; approach subjects and establish trust in order to photograph people in an intimate fashion; use form, lighting, and color in a sophisticated manner to communicate emotionally as well as editorially; balance a personal point of view while respecting a subject’s situation; and use focused editing to reveal a story’s essential truth. Gerd will share his own photographic techniques, such as his choice of cameras, lenses, lighting, strobes, and filters. He will explain how capturing quality images at extremely high ISO’s has enabled him to tackle stories for National Geographic Magazine that previously were impossible to explore (Moscow Never Sleeps, Chernobyl, Russian Orthodox Church, etc).

Gerd will address the changing market for photographers, and how to expand short assignments into long-term personal projects using the latest fund-raising, distribution, and marketing methods. As a pioneer in crowd-funding, Gerd successfully financed his latest trip to the Chernobyl zone via Kickstarter, resulting in exhibitions, publications, and most recently, an interactive multimedia photo book in the form of the iPad app “The Long Shadow of Chernobyl”.

REGISTRATION:

To sign up, please send an email to: workshop@gerdludwig.com along with your first payment of $100, through PayPal. Please contact us if you have any questions about using PayPal.

A second payment of $400 is due by March 21th and the final balance of $465 is due by April 15th.

Workshop is limited to 12 students. All payments are non-refundable.

From Past Students:

“It was an incredible opportunity for me to learn from National Geographic photographer Gerd Ludwig. With his personal instruction he taught me to see the emotional side of a photo, taking my passion for photography to a new level. His vision opened my eyes to a different perspective of the world.” – Steffi Graff, tennis champion

“Of all the workshops I’ve taken, the one that made the biggest impact on me was a two day workshop with Gerd at the Salton Sea. I’ll never forget being dropped off by myself in Niland with only 45 minutes to take an environmental portrait of a total stranger in their home. I had never done anything like that before; but, Gerd had taken the time to share his own stories and offer advice about approaching sensitive situations as a photographer. I ended up meeting and photographing a wonderful family. He pushed each student beyond their comfort zones as photographers. It was an invaluable lesson.” – Robert Larson, photographer

“During Gerd’s workshop at the Salton Sea, he pushed us to try new techniques, such as using remote flashes and gels, in order to help us get a feel for what the equipment was capable of, and how to use it to get interesting shots that would have been impossible any other way. He helped us see things we had missed, or better ways to approach the scene – encouraging us to get closer and see in different ways. At one point, I found myself standing ankle-deep in dead fish and algae, fighting to keep up with him as we tried to find the best shot – flash in one hand, camera in the other, and toes crossed that I’d be able to avoid tumbling headlong into a pile of rotting muck – while he helped me figure out how to set up shots in ways I had never considered, and how to wield the equipment in ways that proffered uncharted results. I have never learned as much, or had quite so much fun, as I did those days out in the desert with Gerd and his team.” – Kristen Spillane, photographer

In a time when media outlets are struggling for survival, and traditional funding sources are drying up, crowdfunding is a new tool creating great opportunities for photographers and entrepreneurs alike. This panel discussion brings together renowned photographers, Gerd Ludwig, Aaron Huey, and Jon Pack, with inventor Justin Jensen, and Karim Ben Khelifa, CEO and co-founder of crowdfunding website Emphas.is, who will all share their expertise about developing a successful campaign to fund your next personal project.

Moderated by National Geographic photographer Gerd Ludwig, the panel discussion, entitled Crowdfunding Your Photography Project, will reveal the power of crowdfunding, and share the secrets of this new fundraising tool. Panel members will explain how to create a powerful pitch video to grasp the attention of backers and how to best spread the word via social networking sites and blogs. They will point out the challenges they faced, share with you how they overcame traps and pitfalls in their projects, (such as factoring shipping costs into the reward levels) and how to keep your backers engaged after fundraising is completed, thereby creating an audience throughout the lifecycle of your project.

The panel discussion takes place on Friday, October 26th from 1:30 to 3:30pm at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

Of all manmade environmental catastrophes in human history, Chernobyl is considered to have caused the most lasting impact. Since his first visit in 1993, Gerd Ludwig has been documenting the aftermath of the accident in dramatic and compassionate photographs — the failed reactor, the contamination to the land, and the countless victims in the fallout regions.

April 26, 2011 marked the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident. At 1:23am, the nuclear power plant’s reactor #4 blew up after operators botched a safety test, triggering an explosion and a fire that burned for 10 days. The radioactive fallout spread over tens of thousands of square kilometers, driving more than a quarter of a million people permanently from their homes. It was the world’s worst nuclear accident to date. Twenty-five years later, the long shadow of Chernobyl continues to darken land and lives. Gerd Ludwig’s stunning and in-depth documentary images exemplify his own credo, “great photography touches the soul and broadens the mind”.

This exhibition of over 50 photographs spanning Gerd Ludwig’s long-term project will take place at the Kunst Haus in Nuremberg Germany from October 3rd through November 25, 2012.

In January 1978, photographer Gerd Ludwig and journalist Peter Sager went on a journey to the Lower Rhine with Joseph Beuys. It lead them back to Beuys’ origins, back to his roots, to the city near the Lower Rhine in which it all began.

18 images, including many never before published, are now on display at the Kurhaus in Kleve, Germany through January 13th, 2013. A fine art edition of 15 images is available exclusively through the museum and a book will be announced shortly. Please contact the studio for availability.

Gerd Ludwig captured Joseph Beuys as he was reconnecting with his past in an impressive way. Some of the photos he produced were published in the German “Zeit-Magazin” in April 1978, accompanied by an essay written by Peter Sager. However, a corpus of work remained unpublished and unseen by the public up to this day.

To Beuys, it was a “view back into the landscape,” as Sager wrote. He went trough Kleve’s Lower Rhine landscape with a low horizon and high skies. “This is his landscape, very simple and with depth, sparse, like his works”. Beuys visited places of his childhood and youth, like his former school, now called “Freiherr-vom-Stein Gymnasium” in Kleve. There he discussed art with the students, as well as the “meaning of life,” as Sager says. Castle Gnadenthal was the last stop of his journey. It is the place where Anacharsis Cloots, who was nicknamed “orator of mankind” and whose work served as an important inspiration for Beuys, was born in 1755. Symbolically, Beuys is holding Cloots biography in his own hands.

Join National Geographic photographer Gerd Ludwig for two nights of incredible documentary photography theory, technique, and storytelling. Both events are hosted by the new The Canon Hollywood Professional Technology and Support Center at 6060 Sunset Blvd. See parking instructions below.

Storytelling with Personal Vision, hosted by the ASMP LA and Canon

Wednesday, August 15 from 7-9pm (doors open at 6pm)

In his lecture, Gerd Ludwig will share his personal approach to intimate, layered, and complex storytelling for National Geographic Magazine and other publications. He will focus on how to capture atmosphere and mood, while maintaining a sense of place; approach strangers and photograph them in an intimate fashion; and how to use form, lighting, and color in a sophisticated manner in order to communicate emotionally as well as editorially. He will talk about how his own photographic techniques (such as his use of wide-angle lenses, high ISOs, and his use of natural light in combination with handheld TTL flash) enable him to emphasize his message.

Throughout the lecture Gerd will show work he shot for National Geographic, convey how the take was presented to the editors and how it finally ran in the magazine. This way attendees will get an inside look at how a story moves from proposal to the published magazine article.

Finally, Gerd will advise how to survive in today’s marketplace, explaining how to take advantage of crowd-funding, social networking, and new media to get a personal project financed and seen by a wider audience. As a pioneer in crowd-funding, Gerd successfully financed his most recent trip to the Chernobyl zone via Kickstarter, resulting in exhibitions, publications, and most recently, an interactive multimedia photo book in the form of the iPad app “The Long Shadow of Chernobyl”.

Shooting Digitally in Low Light, a Canon Live Learning event

Thursday, August 16 from 6-8pm

Capturing quality images at extremely high ISO’s is one of digital technology’s latest and most important advances – and its impact is nowhere more visible than in photojournalism and documentary photography. In this lecture, photographer Gerd Ludwig will show how the latest developments in digital technology provide huge advantages in low light situations and greater mobility during difficult assignments.

Several stories that appeared in National Geographic Magazine exemplify Gerd Ludwig’s use of “digital vision” to cover subjects that would otherwise have been hard or impossible to explore (Chernobyl, Moscow Never Sleeps, Russian Orthodox Church, etc). The jump to extremely high ISO digital capture has also made the handheld flash a more powerful tool in the hands of photographers. Gerd will share his use of natural light in combination with hand-held TTL flash, colored gels, and wide angle lenses to emphasize his message, to give a sense of place, maintain atmosphere, and create photo essays with a personal vision.

Register for the event here: http://learn.usa.canon.com/events_calendar/event_details/cll_events/20120816_hollywood_ludwig_cll.shtml

Street parking is free after 7pm in the area, please read signs carefully. Parking at the Sunset Media Tower located at 6255 Sunset Blvd (& Argyle) adjacent to the Coffee Bean and FedEx is $7 at a discounted rate if you mention you are with the Canon Group.

For this year’s SHOTS & WORKS presentations at the LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph in Charlottesville, Virginia, Gerd Ludwig has created a special presentation of his long-term project, The Long Shadow of Chernobyl. Joining an incredible list of 40 photographers, Gerd’s presentation explores the aftermath of the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster.

Gerd’s presentation will take place during the WORKS projection on Saturday, June 9th from 9-11pm at the Charlottesville Pavilion.

To view the whole list of presenters and purchase tickets please visit The LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph.

ABOUT LOOK3
LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph is a celebration of photography, created by photographers, for those who share a passion for the still image. The Festival features exhibits and on-stage appearances of three “INsight” photographers, as well as exhibitions, outdoor projections, workshops and interviews over three days and nights.

Billed as “3 days of peace, love and photography,” the Festival is designed to bring together the international photography community and create opportunities for attendees and artists to share images, ideas, and to be inspired.

ABOUT SHOTS & WORKS
Showcasing some of the most exciting and innovative current photography projects today, these Friday and Saturday evening projections in the Charlottesville Pavilion present a dynamic cross-section of work from photojournalism to fine art. In these 2-hour projections, established professionals and emerging artists are given the rare opportunity to fully express an entire project to a large audience. With the freedom to show many images and add voice and/or music to accompany the projection, artists are freed from typical commercial constraints.
